New MacBook / MacBook Pros
New MacBook and MacBook Pros have been released, with some speed bumps and increase in storage. MacBooks now support up to 4 GB of memory though.I wonder if the previous MacBooks will take the 2 GB SODIMM modules as well...

Apple still shows Tiger users some love
So Leopard roared since the past few weeks, but that doesn't mean Apple's forgotten Tiger. If you haven't upgraded to Leopard and still run on Tiger, fire up Software Update and find 10.4.11 ready to be served. Aside from several security fixes, this update also includes goodies such as Safari 3.Labels: Apple, Mac, Software Update, tiger

Leopard tamed!
My previous experiences with upgrading Mac OS X have always been positive: insert CD (or DVD), restart, click upgrade, watch TV, done. This time of upgrading to Leopard, however, proved to a challenge. The Leopard DVD comes as a dual-layer format, and that seems to cause confusion to my MacBook. The first time I inserted it, the MacBook spitted it back out. A fluke, I'd thought. Tried again, heard some unusual disc spinning noises, but eventually it read the DVD. Clicked install and restart, went through the early installation steps (picked a language, install destination, etc.), then as the process went half-way, the dreaded "Installation Failed" warning popped up. I tried a couple more times, even choosing the risky "Erase and Install" option, but that didn't help. Instead I ended up with an erased drive and no operating system. Not good.
Thankfully we have another Mac at home, and I was finally able to install Leopard on my MacBook by starting it in Target Disk mode connected to the other Mac. Now I've spent hours trying to set it up with various missing applications and such. I'm finally at a point where I can productively use the laptop again.
I was glad that I'd done a backup just last week and was able to retrieve some needed documents. Also found my Parallels virtual machine image of Windows XP and restored it. Hint: Backup just stores the data as a DMG file which you can mount and browse.
Also FYI, my DVD drive specs are:
MATSHITA CD-RW CW-8221:
Firmware Revision: GA0H
Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
Cache: 2048 KB
Reads DVD: Yes
CD-Write: -R, -RW
Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw
Media: Insert media and refresh to show available burn speeds

Lining up for Leopard
Edward and I stood in line at the Lenox Square Apple Store on Friday for the premier of Leopard. I'd say by 6pm EDT there was approximately 300-400 people in line. It's always interesting to see how Apple fans would queue up for such an event -- nobody lined up to grab a copy of Vista! Store employees were nice enough to hand out bottled water to folks and inform everyone how to proceed into the store. Here are some photos taken with my iPhone.

Another stellar quarter for Apple
We are fans of Apple products here at the company, in case you haven't noticed. We work with Windows and Unix platforms, too, but Macs have a special place in our work (and life). We didn't jump on the bandwagon, however, as it took years of working in IT to appreciate the simplicity of Macs. Plug-and-play, not plug-and-pray. It just works. So it comes as no surprise that Apple announced another profitable quarter -- $904 million richer. Macs, iPods, and iPhones all sold very well, and Apple continues to increase its PC market share.
What's the secret? Create great products, and people will buy 'em.
As more people become Mac users, Jambo Consulting is well positioned to help along the way. Each year we've seen more and more small businesses take the leap into using Macs, and no one has regretted making that decision.

My iPhone, my digital hub
Can you believe we haven't mentioned the iPhone since it went on sale in June? iPhone mania was everywhere, starting with folks spending the night in front of Apple Stores, and now with the controversy about iPhone hacking (to run 3rd party software). Both Edward and I were present at the keynote where Steve Jobs unveiled the iPhone in front of the world, and believe me, it was probably one of the most exciting Apple moments in my lifetime. Since then, like many others, I started counting down the days of the iPhone sale date.
But no, I wasn't an early adopter of the iPhone. In my opinion it was priced too high. My phone was the Nokia E61, a Symbian smartphone that had all the bells and whistles to keep my life in order. It had a full QWERTY thumb keyboard so I can type those important emails and IMs. It was a very business-y phone.
Yet that $599 shiny thinness was like no other phone in the market. Then it became $399 and I was sold. The fact that I was already a AT&T Wireless customer made the decision a bit easier. The next day after the price drop was announced, I stopped by a local Apple Store and handed over my credit card with a mental note to sell my iPod Video 30GB and Nokia E61 on eBay ASAP.
Despite its deficiencies (yes, there are several), there is no doubt that Apple had hit another home run with the iPhone. It is beautifully designed, and with a OS X soul, the user experience is unlike anything. Think back to when you FIRST encountered/used an Apple product... Remember that feeling? (The Newton PDA for me.)
So now instead of keeping three devices (phone, iPod, digital camera), I just have an iPhone. Sometimes it even replaces my laptop as the Web browsing machine, thanks to MobileSafari (none of that crappy WAP). With the latest firmware update, even iTunes is available on the iPhone to spend more money on the go.
Steve Jobs wanted the Mac to be my digital hub. I'm sure he doesn't mind the iPhone being my digital hub.

Apple iPhone Non-sense
It seems like many critics are going out of their way to critisize Apple's iPhone. First, the iPhone's too expensive, then the price cut is too much too soon, and now selling 1 million iPhones in 74 days is too slow.Blackfriars' is right, I think selling a million of anything in two months is pretty awesome. Another point I would add to their list is that the 1 million iPhones sold were only sold in the US. Woudn't the sales accelerate even more as Apple starts rolling out the iPhone to International markets? I think it would be pretty difficult for Apple to maintain "a consistent rate" of iPhone sales even if they tried.
I don't know guys, I think there are more people living outside of the US than inside... Maybe we should send these critics some maps fromhttp://mapsforus.org/.

New iMacs and more...
Engadget has some great coverage of today's Apple Event where Steve Jobs announced new iMacs, iLife '08, and iWork '08. Some notable additions include the long rumored Number's spreadsheet application and an increase of storage space for .Mac users up to 10 GB. MacWorld also has great coverage of the event ( with less pretty pictures ).It looks like Apple is rounding out it's competitor to Microsoft Office. I think for a large number of business users, iWork will provide more than enough features for them, as well as ease a lot of frustration with Microsoft Office. Being able to quickly create a document and make it look nice, or enter some numbers and easily create a good looking report will be very appealing to many users. Though many of the very advanced users will still stick to Excel for it's extensive list of features and functions. At $79 for a basic office suite vs. several hundred dollars for Microsoft Office, I think iWork '08 will be a big hit.
